• American Kennel Club (AKC) — Official breed standards, group classifications, and popularity rankings.
• Veterinary Research — Peer-reviewed studies on breed-specific health conditions, prevalence rates, and severity classifications.
• Breed Club Publications — Detailed temperament descriptions and care recommendations from national breed clubs.

Rating System

Our 1-5 rating system for characteristics like shedding, exercise needs, and trainability is based on:

• AKC breed standard descriptions
• Veterinary and trainer consensus from published guides
• Cross-referencing multiple breed reference databases

Ratings represent breed-typical behavior. Individual dogs may differ based on genetics, training, and socialization.

Health Data

Health conditions are sourced from veterinary databases and breed health surveys. Severity classifications (Mild, Moderate, Severe) are based on impact on quality of life, treatment complexity, and prevalence within the breed.

Updates

We review and update our database quarterly to incorporate new veterinary research, changes in breed standards, and updated popularity rankings.

Limitations
